Chapter Nine

“It pulls inward… or pushed inward depending on where you are, I guess,” Jensen said, standing on the chair Cory was holding tightly on top of the mattress. It was scary. I was afraid he was going to topple over, but somehow, they made it work, and he found the way to open what appeared to be a hatch door in the ceiling. It was built to be secret. This house was full of surprises.

“Tom, be careful,” Cory ordered as Jensen slowly stuck his head and then his torso through the opening. He had his flashlight, and we waited for him to tell us what he was seeing.

“Holy shit… It’s definitely a passage. I don’t see any wires or anything, and it’s large enough for me to be on my hands and knees with some extra room. It’s actually pretty damn big.” Jensen’s torso kept turning this way and then the next, and Cory was having a hard time keeping the chair balanced. “I’m crawling up.”

“How deep does it go?” Harper wanted to go in himself and was concerned about his deputy crawling into the unknown. I had told him that it had to be done. We had to know.

“My flashlight beam doesn’t reach all the way. It’s dark. But it looks like it runs the length of the house… maybe. It runs a good long way. I’m going to go this way toward the center of the house to the rear, as I can see the wall to my right. We’re what, two rooms away from the front of the house? If it goes all the way to the front, it probably goes all the way to the back, right?”

“Ok… we’re going to go to the next room. Are there hinges on the hatch?”

“I mean, there would have to be…” Jensen shut the hatch and reopened it. “Yep. They’re small, but they are there. Harper, if there’s one of these in every room…”

“I know. Vicki and I are going to go to the next room and wait for you. Bang on the floor if there’s no door to open.”

“Gotcha.”

“Harper, do you hear that?” I asked, listening carefully.

“No… What should I be hearing?” He asked, puzzled.

“We can’t hear Jensen moving above our ceiling. It must be insulated like my padded bra. There’s nothing.”

“That’s unsettling. Jesus, even the thought of it gives me the heebie-jeebies. Come on. You have the keys?”

I held them up and jingled them. Cory removed the chair from the mattress, and we left our room, locking it behind us, and walked to the room next door, which was empty. I unlocked it, and Harper slowly pushed it open.

Jensen’s legs were dangling from the ceiling, swinging back and forth.

“Beat you. That passage isn’t anywhere as narrow as I thought. It’s actually pretty spacious. I’m on my hands and knees, but I can sit in it just fine with a little room above my head. How is that possible?”

“There’s a space between the floors, almost like a subfloor of some kind.
